Machado de Assis is widely regarded as Brazil’s greatest author. Regrettably, the Anglophone world remains largely unaware of his powers, as prodigious as Pele’s though they might be.
And so it’s here that I plan to slowly rectify the situation by slowly translating his masterwork, Dom Casmurro, into English. It’s a gargantuan task, it’s an ambitious task; more importantly, though, it’s an enjoyable task.
Follow the translation chapter by chapter right from the beginning, and should your linguistic abilities extend as far as the Lusophonic, compare what I’ve done to the Portuguese original.
